How Do You Decide Between Good And Best?

How do you decide between the good and the best for your life and career? I regularly have conversations with individuals with questions along these lines. They feel pressure from well-meaning persons to move in life and career directions which seem good but may not be best for them.

There is a way to consistently decide for the best. But, it means saying “no” often to things which are merely good.  You can do this.

When the question of good versus best for life and career comes into view:

  1. Get clear about where you want to go ultimately. Write out a personal mission/purpose statement which is built on your belief system, values, and strongest interests (passions). This is foundational and essential for making the best decision.
  2. Focus. Use your purpose statement as the sole criterion for making decisions about where your will spend your energy and time.
  3. Take courage and say “no” to the good things. Say “yes” only to the best things which contribute to achieving your purpose and mission.
  4. Be strong and hold the course toward your purpose, even when the pressure seems high or the way difficult.

Some of my favorite quotes on this subject are:

If you don’t know where you’re going, any road can take you there.

– Lewis Carroll

If a man does not know what port he is steering for, no wind is favorable to him.

– Seneca

Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one’s thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world.

– Goethe

Never forget that only dead fish swim with the stream.

– Malcolm Muggeridge

What do you recommend for helping individuals decide?

What has worked for you in making this kind of decision?
